Before 1846, when an enormous gale carved away the present-day Hatteras inlet, all southbound sailing vessels were forced to meander through the Graveyard of the Atlantic. Ships were sometimes stranded for weeks before they could round Cape Point, and reach the safe waters of the Pamlico Sound. Navigating past Hatteras, North Carolina was a fisherman’s nightmare. How ironic, then, that today the area is best known as a sailing and fishing capital of the Outer Banks. Today, the very same waters that fisherman found so daunting in the 1800s draw people to Hatteras today. It’s a surfer’s delight: the convergence of the Gulf Stream and the Labrador Current result in the biggest surf on the east coast. These pristine beaches are something to boast about, whether you’re swimming or just lazing around. Dr. Steven P. Letterman, more widely known as “Dr. Beach,” voted Cape Hatteras Beach as #8 among the list of Top Ten Beaches in America, 2008. And let’s not forget your many opportunities for windsurfing, kiteboarding and kayaking, through local rental agencies. Hatteras Village is nestled in to the southernmost end of Hatteras Island. It’s just a short drive to the Cape Hatteras Lighthouse, an iconic symbol for North Carolina, and to the Cape Hatteras National Seashore. North Carolina Highway 12 passes right on to Hatteras Island, so it’s easily accessible whether by ferry or car. Like we said, fishing has a major pull on Hatteras’s tourist industry.
