Waves, NC Oceanfront Vacation Rentals
On the Outer Banks

With such a straightforward name, it’s hard to believe that the town of Waves, NC went through centuries of changes before finally settling on its current title. In the 1800s, the Native Americans called the entire area of Waves and its surrounding villages “Chicamacomico.” This changed in 1874, when the name switched over to Rodanthe, and present-day Waves became South Rodanthe (We don’t blame you if you’re lost by now). At last, after a series of changes that left postmen confused and befuddled, South Rodanthe became known as Waves. That hasn’t changed since 1939. In fact, not a lot about Waves has changed. We’re another of those quiet beach towns that are characteristic to the Outer Banks. If you’re looking for a quiet getaway, this is the place for you. There are plenty of pristine, relaxing sights to see, such as the Cape Hatteras National Seashore and the Cape Hatteras Lighthouse. Both of these sites have drawn people to the Outer Banks for years. The beaches along these parts have been named #8 in a list of the Top 10 Beaches in America 2008, by the renowned expert Dr. Beach. Understandably, water sports are popular here, and local businesses are here to cater to your every beach-going need. This includes kayaks, sailboats and windsurfing equipment, or if you’re feeling adventurous, try your hand at kiteboarding, a popular Outer Banks sport. Rental agencies also offer kayak eco-tours, where you can become acquainted with the wildlife and foliage of the natural area around you. Surf shops sell and rent boards, and are always willing to give lessons. Waves is also the home to a popular public windsurfing launch area.
